About the Cattle
Our cattle are raised as naturally as possible, there are never any hormones or growth supplements fed to the animals. Their diet is primarily grass and hay, and we try our very best to manage our grasslands – keeping the cows grazing for as much of the year as mother nature allows.
Our younger feeder cattle do get a mix of ground barley in their feed during the winter months along with their hay to help them grow and develop. The grain is a small ration mixed into ground straw that gives them a nutrient and protein boost for muscle development, as well as helping to get them through a cold winter. Once the grass is green again they are back out happily grazing.
All the cattle also get a small ration of spent distillers grain almost daily, either as a slurry to lick at or mixed into hay, depending on the time of year. The distillers mash helps add a little boost of nutrition to their diet as well as they absolutely love the stuff; its like a little treat for them.
We get the distillers mash from Wildlife Distillery in Canmore, AB and have been using it in our feed ration since 2019. They source top quality grain from here in central Alberta so we know the quality of feed left behind from their process is top notch. I can’t say enough good things about Matt and Keith and the whole team at Wildlife Distillery; I have been working with them for years and they are a big part of why we are taking this step into selling farm fresh beef.
